Ackee is a strange and unusual name for a strange and unusual fruit! It was brought to other countries from Western Africa. This tropical fruit is now considered Jamaican national fruit. It tastes great with vegetable dishes. The outside of the fruit reminds the shape of the brain. You can either use it for cooking or eat it raw. There are no fatty acids or cholesterols in the species. The flesh of ackee is white or yellow and contains black seeds. Since the seeds contain hypoflycin, a poisonous substance, it is not available in US grocery stores.
