Approximately 90% of the fish that is brought to the USA come from Vietnam. In Vietnam they use a lot of antibiotics to grow catfish. Most of them have been banned for use in the states. In the USA you can find two types of imported catfish – Swai and Basa, which could hardly be called catfish. This means that both Swai and Basa are not inspected as thoroughly as the other imported species.
2. Tilefish
This species of fish comes from a very wide family called Malacanthidae. The Environmental Protection Agency makes no distinction between them. Next time you hear that tilefish is unhealthy to eat, skip all varieties. Tilefish should not be given to anyone, especially pregnant women and children. Atlantic tilefish is said to be one of the safest varieties, but you should still avoid eating it unless you are 100% sure the species that you put in your mouth is safe. If not, exclude it from your menu.
